Dr. Bruce Levy
Dr. Bruce P. Levy is an expert medical examiner, forensic pathologist and informaticist. Dr. Levy is triple board certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology, Clinical Pathology and Forensic Pathology.
After a successful practice as a Medical Examiner for the City of New York, Dr. Levy moved with his young family to Nashville Tennessee to reform a dysfunctional medical examiner system. Using the techniques of change management and workflow/process improvement, Dr. Levy transformed the Nashville Medical Examiner into a nationally accredited and acclaimed office. At the same time Dr. Levy pioneered the complete privatization of a government department and proved that it is an improvement over the typical government-based medical examiner’s office.
Dr. Bruce Levy’s work in Nashville was quickly recognized, and demands for his services spread across Tennessee and into neighboring states. In 1998, Dr. Levy was appointed Chief Medical Examiner of Tennessee. Working in partnership with the government, Dr. Levy transformed the practice of forensics and medical examiners throughout the state. He spearheaded an effort to revise the medical examiner laws, bringing Tennessee to the forefront in forensic medicine.
Dr. Levy began applying the concepts of informatics into the practice of the medical examiner. He personally wrote his own medical examiner database, which became the basis for the Nashville office's first information system. He introduced many innovations into subsequent versions of his forensic information system, such as integration of digital images and documents, direct connections to outside lab information systems allowing both ordering and automatic inclusion of results, specimen and body tracking, monitoring of workflow and processes, and warehousing of data to allow government agencies (such as public health, DEA, homeland security) to mine the data for trends and research.
Dr. Levy is now pursuing the new field of medical informatics full time. Medical informatics is the study and management of health information. He has completed his fellowship in informatics at the Massachusetts General Hospital, and is now Director of Informatics in the Pathology Department the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Levy plans to take the new Clinical Informatics Board Exam in October 2013.
